Let’s Talk Disinfectants

I can’t escape the never ending germs here. You have to love toddlers right?

The boogers keep flowing, sick or not, and no matter how many times I wipe them off his face.

Now I have a chest cold which is just amplified by my fibro. I am not exaggerating when I say that when my hairs on my arms stand up I want to cry. My skin aches.

Unfortunately though, there ain’t no rest for the Mamas. I had to empty the diaper genie yesterday, the smell was revolting. I usually wipe it down with a Lysol wipe afterwards, but this time I made my own disinfectant spray.

After scouring the Internet, I took a bit from each recipe to make my own. It isn’t hard at all to make and I already had all the ingredients. For this I used:

  • Vinegar (3/4cup x2) – most recipes called for 3/4 of a cup of rubbing alcohol as an optional ingredient. I didn’t have any so I just added vinegar twice, as the Internet suggested.

  • 1 cup of hot water
  • 10-15 drops of essential oil – some websites say 40-50 drops. That seems quite excessive. I used lemon essential oil because it was something I had on hand. Websites say that the best oil you can use is tea tree oil or lavender oil.

While I obviously can’t see if it worked, the smell disappeared immediately. It didn’t return either! Well.. until my son unleashed another bomb into it. There was no harsh chemical residue either.

By doing it this way, I also hit a zero waste achievement! I use a cloth instead of paper towel or those wipes. This not only saves me a couple hundred a year on disinfectant, but makes me feel like I am doing something more for the environment.
